PCR Test (Polymerase Chain Reaction) and COVID-19 Diagnosis

What is a PCR Test? A PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) test is a laboratory test used to detect viruses like COVID-19. This test detects the RNA molecules of the virus from a throat or nasal swab sample taken from the patient. The COVID-19 PCR test determines whether the person is infected with the COVID-19 virus.

How is the PCR Test Done? PCR tests are usually done by taking swab samples from the throat or nose. The test results are typically provided on the same day. The sample can also be collected by an expert team who can visit the patient's location if needed.

Is Any Preparation Needed Before a PCR Test? No special preparation is required for a PCR test. A swab sample is simply taken from the nose or throat to conduct the test.

When Will the PCR Test Result Be Available? PCR test results are usually available on the same day at laboratories. The results can be accessed via the e-Nabız system with the person's Turkish ID number, or the report can be provided directly by the laboratory.

What Does a Positive PCR Test Mean? A positive PCR test means the person is infected with COVID-19. In this case, the person must be isolated and treatment should begin immediately. It is also important to trace contacts and implement quarantine measures. Social distancing, hygiene, and mask protocols should be strictly followed.

What Does a Negative PCR Test Mean? A negative PCR test means the person is not infected with the virus. However, even if the result is negative, it is essential to continue following hygiene, mask, and social distancing rules.

The PCR test is a highly sensitive test that can detect even very small amounts of the virus in the body. This characteristic plays a critical role in identifying infected individuals and preventing the spread of the virus.
