General Surgery

General surgery is a technical discipline that involves the surgical treatment of both systemic and local issues in the body. It encompasses general principles, such as wound healing, metabolic and endocrine responses to injury, and has influenced many surgical and fundamental medical fields in terms of development.

The term "surgery" originates from the Latin word chirurgiae, which means "handwork." It is one of the oldest branches of medicine, focused on repairing diseases, injuries, and structural abnormalities in the body through surgery, or removing diseased organs and restoring them to their natural and proper shape.

Types of surgery are mostly named after the organ or system involved. Examples of surgeries in the field of general surgery include thyroid (goiter) surgery, breast surgery, esophagus surgery, stomach surgery, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, anus, hernia surgeries, liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, as well as endoscopic and laparoscopic surgical interventions. When categorized by systems, surgeries include thyroid surgeries, breast surgeries, esophagus, stomach, duodenum, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, anus surgeries, liver, and hernia surgeries. In some cases, general surgery also aims to prevent surgery through preventive medicine.

The General Surgery Department works closely and in coordination with many other disciplines due to its broad scope. A large portion of general surgery patients involve various types of cancer cases. For these patients, diagnosis, surgery, and subsequent treatment planning are carried out in collaboration with departments such as Gastroenterology, Radiology/Interventional Radiology, Pathology, Medical and Radiation Oncology.

Another area of interest in general surgery is traumatology. Due to the frequent occurrence of multiple organ system injuries in trauma patients, cooperation with Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, Urology, and Cardiovascular Surgery departments is essential. In cases of severe multiple organ injuries, the General Surgery Department coordinates the collaboration of all these medical fields.

In the General Surgery Departments of our hospitals, with a sense of social responsibility aimed at improving public health, screening and detailed follow-up programs for early diagnosis of colorectal and breast cancers are also conducted.
