Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation
Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation
Physical therapy and rehabilitation is a multidisciplinary field of medicine that works in collaboration with other medical branches to improve or eliminate disabilities affecting a person’s life and quality of life. It aims to reintegrate patients effectively into their social lives. Tailored treatments are provided for both inpatients and outpatients, considering their specific conditions. Various methods and technological tools are utilized to assess and address functional limitations caused by permanent damage and restricted movement. These include thermotherapy (heat applications), cryotherapy (cold applications), hydrotherapy, electrotherapy, phototherapy, mechanotherapy, and medication-based treatments.
What Are the Applications of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation?
Exercise:
A treatment method that strengthens weak muscles and tissues through physical activity, enhancing the musculoskeletal system. It is used to correct postural problems and alleviate associated pain. Additionally, respiratory exercises are applied to improve lymphatic flow.
Electrotherapy:
A treatment using low- or high-frequency electrical currents to relieve pain and muscle weakness. Electrical currents applied to the affected area help reduce swelling, improve blood circulation, and enhance body functions.
Phototherapy:
A treatment method involving the application of laser and UV rays to targeted areas of the body.
Hydrotherapy:
Water-based treatments, including hot water baths, contrast baths, seawater therapy, thermal spring treatments, and whirlpool baths.
Manual Therapy:
A physical therapy method performed solely by hand, without the use of drugs or devices. This therapy alleviates muscle spasms, tension, and pain, leading to rapid recovery.
Mechanotherapy:
A physical therapy approach that involves the use of tools and equipment for spinal traction, compression applications, and manipulations.
Thermotherapy:
A treatment method involving surface or deep heat applications to problem areas. Techniques include hot packs, high-frequency electrical currents (microwaves), ultrasound therapy, infrared radiation, sunlight exposure, and paraffin baths.
Cryotherapy:
A type of physical therapy where cold water packs, ice bags, sprays, liquid nitrogen, or cold compresses are applied to painful areas. Commonly referred to as "freezing" in everyday language, this method is used to address acute conditions, accelerate cellular activity, heal connective tissues after surgery, and improve blood circulation.
Regular check-ups are essential for a healthy and high-quality life.
