What is Endoscopy and How is it Done?
WHAT IS ENDOSCOPY?
Endoscopy is the procedure that allows the examination of the upper gastrointestinal system, including the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum, using a flexible instrument with a diameter of 8-12 mm and a camera at its tip.
WHY IS ENDOSCOPY PERFORMED AND WHAT DISEASES CAN BE DIAGNOSED?
Endoscopy is used to determine the cause of disorders in the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. It can be used for diagnostic purposes and can also be used to treat conditions such as gastric bleeding or remove stomach polyps. During the procedure, if any tumor-like formation is observed in the stomach, a biopsy can be taken to confirm the diagnosis.
WHAT IS COLONOSCOPY?
Colonoscopy is the method used to visualize the large intestine, known as the "colon" in Latin, in the human body. A lighted instrument is inserted into the large intestine to assess the condition of the colon's inner surface and to diagnose any tumors or abnormal conditions in the intestines.
WHY IS COLONOSCOPY PERFORMED AND WHAT DISEASES CAN BE DIAGNOSED?
Colonoscopy helps diagnose diseases such as diverticulosis, inflammatory bowel disease, colon cancer, and more. Samples can be taken for pathological examination to distinguish between these conditions. During the procedure, images of internal organs can also be captured if necessary. Colonoscopy is used when there is suspicion of a tumor in the large intestine or to determine whether rectal bleeding is due to a simple lesion or a cancerous growth.
